FasTrac Provides Two-Layer Epoxy Surface Treatment to H-1 Airport Viaduct

About the Project

The H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct improvements include a two-layer epoxy preservation and protective surface treatment applied over the freeway’s eastbound lanes and ramps, including shoulders.

The two-layer epoxy surface treatment technique is the first to be used by HDOT, which incorporates a combination of epoxy binders and aggregates designed to protect the H-1 concrete deck and underlying reinforcements, seal deck cracks, and provide a uniform traffic driving surface.

HDOT utilized the Fastrac EP1500 Epoxy Polymer Pump to dispense the FasTrac CE335 Epoxy Penetrating Sealer onto the concrete deck.  Next, the FasTrac HFST (High Friction Surface Treatment) truck dispensed the CE330 Epoxy Binder and the Armorstone aggregate in a single pass.

The epoxied surface has a higher frictional value than the current concrete deck which improves handling and braking for vehicles, and increases the service life of the structure.

Part 1: Surface Prep

Sweep/Vacuum

A mechanical broom/vacuum sweeper truck without water was utilized prior to application.  All laitance, contaminants, paint, markers and foreign material that may have inhibited the bond of the surface treatment were be removed from the surface before sweeping with vacuum sweeper.  The existing concrete deck was shotblasted.

Skidabrader

This project required the use of both the 16” shot blaster and Skidabrader truck. The Skidabrader was able to get within twelve- inches of the barrier wall due to the side skirting on the machine.

Part 2a: FasTrac CE335 Epoxy Penetrating Sealer

CE335 Epoxy Penetrating Sealer is a two-component, 100% solids, moisture insensitive, low viscosity, low modulus epoxy penetrating sealer.  It meets the current ASTM C881 and AASHTO M235, Type III, Grade 1, Classes B & C specifications.

The CE335 resin is a very low-viscosity liquid-applied resin that penetrates by gravity and agitation into the cracks and surface pores of concrete with the result of preventing infiltration of water and contamination by chlorides.  As a result, service-life of the structure is extended.

The FasTrac EP1500 Epoxy Polymer Pump System was used to dispense the FasTrac CE335 Epoxy Penetrating Sealer on the concrete surface.

Where to use

  • Seal cracks on bridge decks, slabs and floors
  • Single-application healer/sealer
  • Pre-treatment prior to thin epoxy overlay

Features

  • May be used on damp or dry surfaces
  • High elongation epoxy binder
  • Low viscosity, high penetrating
  • Made in America
  • Convenient 1:1 mix ratio by volume

Part 2b: FasTrac EP1500 Epoxy Polymer Pump

The CE335 Penetrating Sealer was applied utilizing an epoxy pump system specially designed for epoxies.  The epoxy pump is mounted on the rear of a truck which also houses two 250 Gallon totes of material (one Component A and one Component B). The totes are generally kept between 65°- 85°F. (Typically, no precondition of the totes will be needed due to the warmer climate in Hawaii).

FasTrac EP1500 Epoxy Polymer Pump System features two tanks containing components A & B, and a sealer hose to dispense the CE335 Epoxy Penetrating Sealer onto the deck.

The mixed epoxy was discharged onto the deck surface, and was followed by a flat squeegee team distributing the CE335 across the entire surface.

Part 3a: FasTrac CE330 Epoxy Binder

Now that the CE335 Penetrating Sealer has been applied to the surface and allowed time to cure, it is time to apply the CE330 Epoxy Binder and aggregate with the HFST Truck.

CE330 Resin Binder surface treatment is a 0-Coulomb/ 0-Chlorie Ion Permeability (AASHTO T277-83 and ASTM C1202) system specially designed for use on bridge deck and pavement applications to seal and prevent water/chloride/salt intrusion from migrating to and damaging reinforcing steel.

FasTrac CE330 Epoxy

Where to use

  • Airport runways
  • Portland cement concrete
  • Asphalt pavements
  • Parking decks
  • Bridge decks
  • Bike and bus lane demarcation

Features

  • High strength, low modulus epoxy binder
  • Rapid cure return to traffic formula
  • Technical support from experienced technicians
  • Independent testing lab certification
  • Convenient 1:1 mix ratio by volume
  • Protects concrete from water and deicing salts

Part 3b: FasTrac HFST Truck

The Surface Treatment truck is equipped with Real Time Reporting showing data during the application. The data shows the volume of mixed resin binder and the volume of aggregate being applied.

The passenger side of the truck depicts the Part B epoxy tank capable of holding 500 gallons of the respective epoxy.  Also depicted is the Aggregate Hopper which is capable of holding 44,000-50,000 lbs of aggregate.

The driver side of the truck depicts the Part A epoxy tank also capable of holding 500 gallons of the respective epoxy. The truck has enough onboard storage of epoxy and aggregate to install a minimum of 2000 square yards of surfacing.

This aggregate distribution system is capable of mechanically placing aggregate from a maximum height of 12” into the wet resin binder evenly across the full width of the installation.
